RSK 5.02 Registration Guide
RSK 5.02 is the single form that registers you as a contractor in Iceland — for the employer registry and optionally VAT. File it at least 8 days before you start. Exception: reiknað endurgjald under 700,000 ISK/year exempts you from employer registry. Fustle helps with the entire process.
What RSK 5.02 registers you for
RSK 5.02 is a combined registration form at Skatturinn. It registers you simultaneously on:
- Employer registry (launagreiðendaskrá) — you become your own employer
- VAT registry (virðisaukaskattsskrá) — if you choose or are required (turnover over 2M ISK)
Use RSK 5.04 later to close your registration when you stop working.
The 8-day rule
You must file RSK 5.02 at least 8 days before you start working or sending your first invoice. Skatturinn needs processing time to approve your registration and issue your staðgreiðsluvefslykill (withholding web key).
Starting work before approval risks penalties and complicates your first tax filings.
700,000 ISK employer registry exception
If your annual calculated remuneration (reiknað endurgjald) is under 700,000 ISK, you do not need to register on the employer registry. Note this on the form.
You still must report and pay tax on actual income. If your income grows above the threshold, file an updated RSK 5.02.
Key form fields
When filling out RSK 5.02 you need:
- Your kennitala (personal ID number)
- Starfaflokk (job category A–H) — determines reiknað endurgjald minimum
- Calculated remuneration amount (monthly or annual)
- Pension fund (lífeyrissjóður) selection
- VAT registration (yes/no — required if turnover exceeds 2,000,000 ISK in 12 months)
- Start date of activity
After submission and closing
After filing you receive a confirmation slip. Skatturinn approves within 1–14 business days and issues your staðgreiðsluvefslykill.
To change your registration (starfaflokkur, reiknað endurgjald): submit an updated RSK 5.02. To close when you stop: file RSK 5.04 — otherwise Skatturinn estimates your income and sends tax bills.
